Segment 1
Segment 2
  • Permeate faith into anything you do
  • Best ear training and to teach simple two part harmony is through church music (5:37)
  • Invitations to participate
  • Among your peers (strength in numbers)
  • Church music offers more breadth to teach harmony due to the close harmonies such as a third or fifth
  • Have students listen to the music, sing them the melody then sing them the harmony (Jesus Jams)
  • Worship music is like praying twice – deeper connection
  • Music doesn’t just identify culture, but also identifies feelings, interests, emotions, and beliefs (religion or faith)
  • Take the time to reflect on what the curriculum wants you to teach
  • Be eclectic in your approach and you delivery and know your audience
  • Well planned leads to reading the situation for that day (more self aware)
  • Learning becomes real when talking about faith
  • Make the faith their own through music. Example: Teach them what a psalm is all about, King David history – earliest songwriter)
  • These lyrics you’re singing is older than Jesus Christ and there is a reason why we still sing it today. It’s about uniting your voice with King David to praise God.
  • Choose music that is based on the readings or theme of the mass!
  • Explain what this is be it the Eucharist etc.
  • Make them more exposed to the Church's teachings through music – explain to them the mass
  • It needs to be special in presentation – I hope your not doing this for attention you are representing your peers,
  • Pick your moments to bring to heart
  • Conversation about our voices join the angels in heaven
  • Death has no power over our family – uniting our praise for the Lord
  • Planting seeds
  • Engagement is by getting students to love what they are singing and connect melodically
  • Identify with the melody so that they can harmonize with it and also identify with the words
  • Once hooked introduce things that are more rich
  • Meet the kids were there at especially when it comes to church music
  • Internalize what they are singing
  • Come up with different strategies to have with it
  • Once they realize how good they sound it takes it to a whole new depth of meaning for them (it becomes their own)
  • Meet them where they’re at
  • So perhaps bring in the clergy to connect with your music group
  • Develop a link to the parish
  • Communication with pastor
  • Invite them (priest) into your classroom
  • Introduce them to the other parts of the mass to draw them closer to the Church
  • Record cd’s with students
  • Invite them to sing the psalm to get them introduce to the life of the Church
  • Leads to self motivation to be a part of the parish
  • The role of a Catholic educator is to live your faith - be active in your parish and be a role model
  • Be present as a catholic educator
  • If you don’t’ live it you are falling short as a Catholic educator
  • Make yourself visible
